To Cut Corners

When you “cut corners,” you do something poorly to save money or time.

To Roast Snow in a Furnace

When you “roast snow in a furnace,” you try to do something impossible and ridiculous.
Example: There is no way Janice, who is barely 5ft tall, could move the couch by herself; she might as well roast snow in a furnace!

New ELI programs in the evenings

The English Language Institute launches new programs in the evenings

More options for students who want to learn English, mornings or evenings, from one to more weeks. Students can also start any week of the year and choose the courses they want. A pronunciation course will also be able in the evenings twice a week.

The English Language Institute (ELI) of the College of Staten Island (CSI)/The City University of New York (CUNY) has run its Intensive English Program for decades with students from literally all over the world. Students from Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America have had ELI classes with grammar, reading, writing, and more skills as long as field trips and academic activities. It has always been learning English in a university environment. The success of this program has grown tremendously in the past years and students are asking for more learning options.

MORNING OR EVENING?
Starting January 26, 2018, ELI starts its Spring semester with the usual morning sessions from 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. from Tuesday to Friday. Many students who work or have different activities during the day may also have the option to study in the evenings and classes will be from Monday to Friday between 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.

This new schedule will have the same morning program but in the evenings. The courses taught are grammar, reading and writing, speaking (communications), and TOEFL preparation workshops plus the official test. To start the application, students can get all the information here.

CHOOSE THE COURSES AND WEEKS YOU NEED
Students will also have the chance to choose how many weeks of English classes they need. They can start classes any week of the year, the number of weeks they want, and the courses they want. If students want to see which date they can start, they can see the link here.

“The courses taught are grammar, reading and writing, speaking (communications), and TOEFL preparation workshops plus the official test”.

Usually, the semester or summer term has its own dates and all the courses are included. Now, students can start any week of the year and study one or more weeks as needed. If they want to study only one or more courses, they can also choose the course they want. The fees in the evenings will also be cheaper. The complete fees and dates can also be seen here.

ELI is the leading institution in English instruction with many international students in a university campus in New York. CSI is the largest CUNY campus with 204 acres and it makes the English classes have a university environment.

“Students can start any week of the year and study one or more weeks as needed”.

ELI students usually come for the entire Spring or Fall semester term of 16 weeks. However, some international students cannot come on the first day of classes. That was one of the reasons ELI will now allow students to join the groups on a different week.

PRONUNCIATION COURSE IN THE EVENIGS
ELI has also launched a new program to improve students’ pronunciation with 4 hours of class per week. This course will have a great focus on sounds, fluency, intonation, and more speaking skills. To register in classes, ELI will contact students here.

TOEFL
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is the most recognized international test to evaluate the accuracy in English acquisition around the world and it is the test that many universities in the United States -and other countries- accept to apply. ELI has in its morning and evening sessions a special course to be prepared for TOEFL, with daily classes and the official test at the end of each term.

It is important to know that this paper-based test evaluates how well students can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks. According to TOEFL, more than 30 million people from all over the world have taken this test to demonstrate their English-language proficiency. ELI includes in the tuition the preparation course and for those who stay until the end of the term have the chance to take the official test and have the score from TOEFL.

ELI Program
The English Language Institute is part of the international area of CSI at the Center for Global Engagement, and it has had students in 2017 from Albania, Algeria, China, Ecuador, India, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Macedonia, Mexico, Peru, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Switzerland, Syria, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, and Vietnam.

ELI expects to have more groups coming next year and welcomes more students for its programs.

International students can see the new information with schedules and dates in the new 2018 brochure here.
