The English Language Institute (ELI) at the College of Staten Island/The City University of New York (CUNY) was pleased to offer a closing session to 36 students from Chuo University, located in Tokyo, Japan, after virtual classes for three weeks during the ELI Spring 2021 semester.

Chuo students had English classes with courses of reading, writing, grammar, conversation, and a TOEFL preparation course. One group shared classes with students from Argentina, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Colombia, China, Ecuador, Peru, Puerto Rico, Saint Lucia, and Vietnam.

Our ELI teachers, Erika Anderson, Sean Jacobsen, Wayne Kennedy, Barbara Clark, and Robert Faison, covered different topics and prepared students to take the TOEFL ITP test at the end of the program. Special mention goes to the high scores Chuo students got in the test showing the level they got at the end of the three-week program.

Some of the students’ comments were ‘Thank you for giving us these lessons. It was very fun for me. I want to study again with my teachers,’ ‘I’m not good at using English but teachers helped me improve my English skills,’ ‘I couldn’t go to New York and take classes, but I enjoyed the last three weeks.’ Even though classes were held very early in the morning from Japan and our evening classes from New York City, the teachers were able to motivate them and have fun classes.
